HOUMA, La. (WVUE/Gray News) - A delivery driver in Louisiana is accused of driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol after being involved in a neighborhood crash earlier this week.

Houma Police Department said the driver was behind the wheel of a FedEx truck when it crashed into a home on Mary Hughes Drive Monday evening.

There were people inside the home at the time of the crash, but no injuries were reported.

According to police, the truck veered off the roadway and crashed into the front of the home.

“There’s a FedEx truck in the house,” said the homeowner’s niece Sophia Ramirez. “Why would this happen in real life.”

The driver of the truck, 31-year-old Michael Smith, failed a sobriety test at the scene, police said.

Authorities found Smith in possession of an open alcoholic beverage, marijuana and tramadol, a reported opioid pain-relief medicine.

Houma police said Smith was taken into custody after refusing to get into a patrol car and failing to cooperate with officers.

Smith was booked into the Terrebonne Parish Criminal Justice Complex on multiple drug possession charges, reckless operation, DWI and resisting an officer.
