MSU unveils mobile clinic to provide free spay and neuter surgeries
EAST LANSING, Mich. (News 10) - Michigan State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine is taking animal care on the road with a new mobile surgical clinic designed to serve shelters and animal welfare organizations across the state.
The college unveiled the 32-foot mobile clinic this week. The unit will provide free spay and neuter surgeries for animals while also giving veterinary and veterinary nursing students hands-on training opportunities.
Officials say the mobile clinic is intended to expand access to care in underserved communities and help address pet overpopulation.
“It isn’t even an official program yet. We don’t officially have students on rotation,” said Kelley Meyers, executive director of the MSU Veterinary Medical Center. “We’ve already been to 13 different partners, animal welfare organizations. They’ve traveled over 2,000 miles and have already sterilized more than 100 animals. So, you can already see the impact. We’ve only been here for a couple of weeks.”
Meyers noted that “sterilized” refers to animals that have been spayed or neutered. She said the clinic’s primary focus is reaching underserved areas where access to veterinary services may be limited.
