Michigan State University opens Pollinator Performance Center
New facility on South Campus Farms showcases honeybee research and care
EAST LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - Michigan State University opened its Pollinator Performance Center on South Campus Farms on Friday.
The facility gives people a look at how honeybees are studied, cared for and put to work in mid-Michigan.
The open house comes ahead of this weekend’s Heartland Apicultural Society Conference. Staff showed off the honey processing space and the research that happens on site.
The center produces about 5,000 pounds of honey, which is sold in one-gallon buckets on campus.
“In Michigan we have over 400 different species of bees,” said Ana Heck, apiculture extension educator at MSU. “We really think a lot about how to keep them healthy so that they can be part of our ecosystems and also so we can have pollination services.”
The Heartland Apicultural Society Conference runs Saturday and Sunday. There is on-site registration at the Kellogg Center for people who want to know more about beekeeping.
