Schools Rule! Ashley Community Schools teacher selected for NASA Liftoff program

ASHLEY, Mich. (NEWS 10) -From the small village of Ashley, Michigan, Ashley Community Schools teacher DeAnn Smith is making an out of this world impact for her students.

Smith is one of around 60 educators selected to be part of this year’s NASA Liftoff program in Houston, Texas, at the Johnson Space Center.

Smith wears several hats as an educator. She is the elementary and middle school physical education teacher and middle school science, chemistry, biology and STEAM teacher.

Now she’ll be the one learning about space travel.

This year’s theme, Moon to Mars: A New Era of Discovery, focuses on NASA’s Artemis space program.

“It is primarily part of the process is they’re looking for STEM and STEAM teachers to do some hands-on learning at the space center and then we can bring that back to our students,” Smith said.

This year’s week-long NASA Liftoff program is scheduled for June 22 through 26.

The institution program started in 1990.
