Democratic VP candidate Tim Walz in Mid-Michigan for campaign stop
EAST LANSING, Mich. (WILX)—Democratic Vice Presidential nominee Tim Walz made a campaign stop in Mid-Michigan on Friday following his trip to Grand Rapids the day before.
On Friday afternoon, Walz landed at the Capitol Region International Airport and went to The Graduate Hotel in East Lansing, just across the street from Michigan State University.
There, he spoke to Michigan’s democratic lawmakers and MSU students, telling them why the participation of young voters in the presidential election matters.
“I don’t think you can underestimate,” he said. “When young people get involved in the process, it reinforces to everyone that the future can be brighter and that our democracy is strong.”
Walz also touched on policy issues that he and Vice President Kamala Harris say they would address if voted into office, including climate change, school safety and growing inflation. He emphasized how climbing inflation has negatively impacted students and their ability to get a college education.
“When I went to school, you could work a minimum wage job in the summer and pay an entire year’s tuition at the University of Minnesota, just by those three months of work,” he said. “A minimum wage job, because it was understood that education isn’t a money-making endeavor. It’s how we invest in you, our future, our economy and innovation for this country.”
Following Walz’s visit to downtown East Lansing, his motorcade moved further away from campus to one of the campaign’s local offices, where he shook hands with volunteers who are helping to spread the campaign’s message.
While in Grand Rapids, he spoke to a crowd of supporters at the Grand Rapids Public Museum and discussed the plans that he and Vice President Kamala Harris have for the country’s economy.
Walz said Harris would support unions, give tax breaks to small businesses, and ban corporate price-gouging, which he blames for inflation.
He also touted his running mate’s debate performance earlier this week.
″What was so clear about it was, and again, not surprising, but there was one person on that stage who should be the next President of the United States, one person,” said Governor Walz.
After taking off from his Mid-Michigan stop, Walz headed for Wisconsin, another election battleground state.
