OKEMOS, Mich. (WILX) - A car caught on fire on Westbound I-96 overnight as a driver returned from a Detroit Lions game overnight on Monday.

Ingham County Sheriff’s Office officials said that at 2:30 a.m., a black car coming from Detroit after the Lions game rear-ended a minivan that was also going westbound. This caused the black car to catch fire; luckily, all occupants made it out safely.

Officials like Sgt. Jeremy Doerr from the Ingham County Sheriff’s Office say keeping yourself awake when taking long trips late at night is essential.

“We have our suspicions that it may have been drowsy driving or that they were tired,” said Sgt. Doerr “If you get tired, just stop and pull over. Don’t drive tired.”

Police told News 10 that the person in the minivan was treated on the scene and released with back pain.

Drugs or alcohol are not believed to be involved in the crash.

I-96 and the surrounding roads have since reopened.
