WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WILX) - No. 13 Michigan State basketball overcame the difficult environment of Mackey Arena as the Spartans upset No. 8 Purdue 76-74 on Thursday night.

Carson Cooper led MSU with 15 points, Kur Teng had 13 points off the bench, Jeremy Fears Jr. scored 12, and Coen Carr had 11 points.

The Spartans called a players-only meeting earlier this week to address the recurring issue of starting games slow, and it seems the meeting had a positive effect, with MSU staying neck-and-neck with Purdue through the first half and trailing 39-36 entering halftime.

The game remained tight through the second half, and MSU took an eight-point lead, its largest of the game, with just over four minutes remaining. Purdue quickly cut the Spartans’ lead down to two, but the Boilermakers couldn’t come up with the game-tying or game-winning shots, and MSU won by two for its first win at Mackey since 2014.

MSU next visits Indiana and will face the Hoosiers on Sunday at 3:45 p.m. ET.
