LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - With Labor Day approaching, AAA is sharing important safety tips for drivers.

Vehicle maintenance tips:

  • Inspect the tread depth and inflation of all tires, including the spare.
  • Test your battery for signs of wear, such as slow engine starts or dim lights.
  • Listen for grinding noises or vibrations when braking.
  • Replace wiper blades if they streak or fail to clear the windshield effectively.
  • Check oil, coolant, and brake fluid levels as recommended in your owner’s manual.

Safe driving reminders:

  • Watch your speed: excessive speed is a factor in nearly one-third of all motor vehicle fatalities.
  • Avoid distractions: distracted driving is a leading cause of crashes. Stay focused on the road.
  • Don’t drive under the influence: arrange for a designated driver or use a rideshare service.
  • Rest and stay alert: fatigued driving can be just as dangerous as driving under the influence.
  • Always wear your seatbelt on every trip, regardless of the distance.

What to do if you experience car trouble:

  • Pull over to the nearest exit or shoulder if you experience car trouble, ensuring you’re as far away from traffic as possible.
  • Turn on your hazard lights
  • Stay with your vehicle if it is safe to do so. If you must exit, move to a secure area away from traffic.
  • Call for assistance using the AAA Mobile App or emergency hotline at 1-800-222-4357.

Last Labor Day holiday weekend, AAA responded to more than 383,000 calls from stranded drivers.

AAA urges all motorists to plan their trips carefully and take preventive measures to reduce the risk of vehicle issues and accidents.
