GM to invest $4 billion in domestic manufacturing

LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - General Motors is set to announce $4 billion in funding for domestic manufacturing plants, increasing U.S. production of gas and electric vehicles. The investment includes plants in Michigan.
Orion Assembly in Orion Township will begin producing gas-powered full-sized SUVs and light-duty pickup trucks. Production will begin in 2027 to meet ‘strong demand.’
GM Factory Zero in Detroit-Hamtramck will become the dedicated assembly location for the Chevrolet Silverado EV, GMC Sierra EV, Cadillac ESCALADE IQ and GMC Hummer EV pickup and SUV.
Specifics on how the funds will be distributed have yet to be announced.
Multiple Michigan officials reacted to the news on Tuesday.
“GM and Michigan have a long, rich history, and today’s massive investment in Lake Orion is just the latest chapter.
“I am grateful to GM for bringing more auto manufacturing back home to Michigan, protecting thousands of good-paying, union auto jobs. Over the last few years, GM has grown their footprint in their home state, and I am proud that the state of Michigan has been a strong partner in helping them ‘build, baby, build!’ We have worked aggressively to bring more auto jobs to Michigan by cutting red tape, incentivizing R&D, streamlining Renaissance Zones, and speeding up permitting, and I am proud that GM is delivering today.
“Since I took office, we have been working across the aisle to win every deal that we can and bring more good-paying union jobs back home. We will continue our comprehensive, commonsense approach to growing our economy and compete with other states and nations while working with industry partners like GM to remain the #1 state for auto manufacturing and weather national economic uncertainty.
“We don’t care what you drive—gas, diesel, hybrid, or electric—as long as it’s made in Michigan. Together, let’s keep bringing manufacturing home, growing the middle class, and making more stuff in Michigan.”
“Thousands of good jobs and billions of dollars in investment are coming to Michigan thanks to one of our longest and most valued employers: GM. I am delighted by this news. Our hardworking and dedicated workforce, vibrant neighborhoods where people want to put down roots, and major advancements in economic policy make our state the natural place to make such a transformative investment.
“Together, we are showing the world that yes, you can champion a pro-worker and pro-employer agenda and in doing so, generate widespread, enduring success. Other manufacturers would be wise to follow suit—Michigan is the place to be!”
“Thank you to President Trump for bringing good, high-paying manufacturing jobs back to Michigan and delivering on his promise to put America First. This is exactly what we said would happen when he unveiled his bold tariff strategy. While other politicians were paying out billions to build EV plants with small job totals, President Trump took the smarter path to bring back gas-powered production that will put more people to work and do it without handouts. President Trump took a strong stand to bring factories back to American shores and punish companies that shed American jobs to move their operations overseas. That plan is working. He took a lot of heat for his decision, but now GM is coming back to Michigan after years of looking to Mexico. President Trump’s victory today is great news for Michigan workers, our local economy, and the entire American auto industry.”
Plants in Kansas and Tennessee will also see major investments.
“Today’s news goes well beyond the investment numbers — this is about hardworking Americans making vehicles they are proud to build and that customers are proud to own,” said GM President Mark Reuss. “As you travel the country, you can see firsthand the scale of our manufacturing footprint and the positive economic impact on our communities and our country.”
“Fairfax Assembly, Kansas City, Kansas: Fairfax Assembly will support production of the gas-powered Chevrolet Equinox beginning in mid-2027. Sales of the recently redesigned Equinox were up more than 30% year-over-year in the first quarter of 2025. Fairfax remains on track to begin building the 2027 Chevrolet Bolt EV by the end of this year. GM expects to make new future investments in Fairfax for GM’s next generation of affordable EVs.
Spring Hill Manufacturing, Spring Hill, Tennessee: GM will add production of the gas-powered Chevrolet Blazer at Spring Hill starting in 2027, alongside the Cadillac LYRIQ and VISTIQ EVs, and the Cadillac XT5″
