How to manage post-election social stress
LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - The election is over, but for many people, the stress level remains high. Whether you’re scrolling through social media or chatting with friends, the topic is nearly impossible to escape.
“Our nation is divided at this point. We’ve got to find a way to come together and if we don’t do that I don’t know where this country is going to end,” said Marcus Jefferson.
“I think this was a particularly polarizing election cycle and it officially ended with someone being elected and people have a variety of different emotions and reactions to that,” said Dr. Crystal Cederna, a clinical psychologist.
Dr. Cederna said emotions can range from happiness and relief to anger or frustration.
In the aftermath of what has been a very emotional rollercoaster for everyone, she said it’s important to take a step back and focus on your mental health.
“Some ways that we can do that is to create space to tend to our health and wellness to simply just reflect and say what am I thinking and feeling? What are my reactions to this? Where are they coming from?” said Dr. Cederna.
Dr. Cederna also recommends taking a break from social media. She said if you‘re feeling stressed you should silence notifications on your phone, or simply tell friends and family you don’t feel comfortable discussing the topic online.
If the election is affecting your sleep, causing panic attacks, or leaving you feeling hopeless Dr. Cederna said professional help may help.
The 988 hotline is also always available to anyone experiencing suicidal thoughts or suffering any kind of emotional distress.
