Clearly high schools in Michigan are divided over fall sports and whether they should be played. The Lansing Public Schools and those in Ferndale are opting out and surely more will come regardless of eventual guidelines next week from the MHSAA. The Michigan districts will all have their own issues and own pressures to deal with and it’s hard to gauge yet who will play and who will not in two weeks.
The big time college athletic departments are financially strapped. Some don’t have naming rights sold on their football stadiums like Michigan and Michigan State. Would they be open to negotiations these days? And what about getting loans from banks if they need loans to pay bills, what about interest rates? And would banks be interested in naming rights? So much to consider moving forward in college sports this school year.
In my view Michigan State football benefits by moving to the spring from the fall. The Spartans were picked to finish 6th in the Big Ten East this fall only ahead of Rutgers. New coach Mel Tucker has barely seen his team and he needs time and plenty of practice to give his team its best chance to win. I’d bet MSU’s performance would have a better chance at success in the spring than starting September 5th against Minnesota.
In my view the major colleges need to revamp how they fund athletic departments. They have way overspent for years, no rainy day funds. In my view they need to put aside a substantial amount of money to get them through tough times if pandemic or similar issues ever arise again.
Just hours after a statement released by the Big Ten said a majority of teams voted not to have a football season this year, University of Michigan football coach Jim Harbaugh released a statement in opposition.
Joe Jimenez may be the Tigers most effective closing pitcher in years. Why? Well the team has some leads these days and he throws strikes and in my view that is the overwhelming key. He is already setting Tigers’ save records and the season has barely begun.
Tough decisions by Monday for college basketball underclassmen—deadline to pull out of the draft and return to their college teams—but will there be college basketball this coming season? And when will the new NBA season begin? Tough calls.
