Recess is Essential

A new study shows that quality recess time during the school day ... can improve students' social skills, attitudes and behavior.
Specially trained coaches were sent to six low-income elementary schools to start organized recess programs focused on following rules, conflict resolution and sportsmanship.
89-percent of teachers saw an improvement in the quality of recess ... and nearly half said their students showed better teamwork and became more encouraging of one another.
The recess improvements also resulted in students learning how to initiate games, becoming more engaged in activities and feeling safer at school.
The study was led by researchers at Stanford University.
