EAST LANSING, Mich (WILX) -- The last time Michigan State hosted Louisiana Monroe was in 2007, during the Drew Neitzel era. The Spartans won back then, and did so 11 years later, defeating the Warhawks 80-59 to move to 2-1.
The Spartans turned it around in the second half after shooting less than 30 percent from the floor in the first.
"Thought we had some good shots, but I thought our passing was poor tonight, and that's what led to some of those average shots," said Head Coach Tom Izzo. "We didn't hit guys when they were ready to shoot it."
Michigan State suffered a key loss in the first half, as Nick Ward left the game with what Izzo says is an ankle sprain.
Enter Cassius Winston, who led the Spartans with 23 points.
"I thought he played within himself, he threw some good passes, he drove some, shot the three, he looked like he wanted to score," said Izzo.
"You saw the first half, so it felt good to have a shot go in, and then a couple started going in," said Winston. "That felt amazing."
Michigan State finishes a 3- game home-stand on Sunday when they play Tennessee Tech.
