Former Michigan State hockey standout Jim Slater has been named the program's volunteer assistant coach. Slater replaces Jason Muzzatti, who recently joined the NHL's Carolina Hurricanes as the club's goaltending coach. Slater played at MSU from 2001-2005 and he completed his 14th pro season this past spring. He is a Lapeer native and spent ten seasons in the NHL with nearly 600 games played.
