Work to begin on Red Cedar redevelopment project, public hearing on developer's work request

LANSING, MI (WILX) -- Work on a long-awaited redeveloping project is set to begin Monday in Lansing.

And you'll have your chance to weigh in on the project.

Workers will be clearing brush at the site of the former Red Cedar golf course.

The work will prepare the property at the border of Lansing and East Lansing, near the Red Cedar River for construction.

The work is expected to begin next month.

Lansing has not closed the deal of selling the city-owned property to the development company Continental/Ferguson, but the city said the closing of the sale is "in the process of being finalized and is expected to happen in the coming weeks."

The redevelopment project includes two hotels, retail space, a river-walk, at least 150 market-rate apartments and 1,100 beds of student housing.

The project is expected to be finished by the fall of 2022.

Developers are asking Lansing City Council to make an exception to the city's noise ordinance.

The ordinance only allows construction near residential zones to take place from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays with the exception of holidays.

The waiver would allow construction to take place seven days a week, 24 hours a day, from Oct. 1 through Nov. 30.

Beginning Dec. 1, the developer has asked to work from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays, including holidays, and from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturdays until the project is finished.

Due to the amount of work it's going to take to finish the project, developers want to have what they are calling an "insurance policy" just in case things get behind.

"This isn't unusual, it's very common when you're building something like this," Christoper Stralkowski, Ferguson Development executive project manager, said. "But again it's an insurance policy for us as developers as construction, to be able to adhere to that schedule because every time you fall behind you're losing work hours then you have to make up at another point. we'll be respectful of everybody and we play in the sandbox well, we always have and continue to do that."

A public hearing on the developer's request is set for 7 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 23 at Lansing City Hall.
