What's Going Around: Colds

LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - Despite what's been a pretty mild fall here in mid-Michigan, doctors have been seeing a lot of patients with upper respiratory infections, otherwise known as the common cold.

Doctor Marie-Louise Sagan-Yewah at McLaren Greater Lansing says the common cold often comes with a cough, runny nose, and a sore throat.

People may also experience itchy or watery eyes, headaches, fatigue, or a fever.

The common cold is contagious and spreads through coughing, sneezing or human contact.

For treatment, Dr. Sagan-Yewah recommends taking ibuprofen and over the counter decongestants and cough medicine.

Vaporizers and humidifiers may also help with a stuffy nose.

The common cold usually lasts one or two weeks. To avoid getting it, Dr. Sagan-Yewah says people should wash their hands and stay away from others who have it.
