UPDATE: Hydroplaning cause of semi-truck accident on US 127

UPDATE: A semi truck accident forced both lanes of US-127 Southbound at Saginaw Highway in Lansing to be shut down for hours on Friday morning. The roadway re-opened just before 7 AM.

When crews arrived after 3:30 a.m. they found the semi-cab of a truck in the median of U.S. 127, just South of the Saginaw/Grand River exit ramp.

Drivers were urged to avoid the area while several departments worked to clean up the scene. Several gallons of diesel fuel were reportedly spilled by the accident. Police say that no water was contaminated and that the DEQ was notified.

Lansing Police say that the accident was caused by hydroplaning, they added it was raining pretty heavy at the time of the crash. The semi had an empty trailer attached that actually hydroplaned, causing the semi to jackknife. The driver then lost control and hit the guardrail, getting hung up on it.

The police had to bring in equipment to get the truck off the rail. That's what caused the multiple hour shutdown of US 127.

The driver was okay and checked out by an ambulance crew. He did not need to go to the hospital.

No other vehicles were involved.
