WHEATFIELD TWP., Mich. (WILX) -- UPDATE:
Two children died in the Friday night crash on eastbound I-96.
The Ingham County Sheriff's Office says a 29-year-old male driver from Romulus lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a tree.
His 9-year-old son and 8-year-old daughter, from Grand Rapids, died in the back seat, according to a press release.
It happened on I-96 eastbound between Zimmer Road and Williamston Road.
Witnesses said the man was driving aggressively, trying to pass vehicles on the shoulder. He lost control and his vehicle went off of the roadway backward. The rear end of the vehicle hit a tree, killing the two children, according to the Sheriff's Office.
The driver was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries.
The Sheriff’s Office is investigating whether alcohol was a factor.
I-96 eastbound between Okemos Road and Williamston Road was closed because of the crash.
The interstate reopened around 2 a.m.
