EAST LANSING, MI (WILX) - Coffee and cats is the idea behind a new cat cafe in East Lansing.
Constellation Cat Cafe is holding its grand opening this weekend.
Someone had just posted, 'Hey, I took my daughter to a cat cafe and she really loved it. Does anyone know of a cat cafe coming to Lansing?' But no one was commenting, "Yes, here are the plans. It's coming.' So after I just kept looking at it, I was like, 'What if I just like did this?'" said Kelsey Maccombs, executive director of Constellation Cat Cafe.
Since its soft opening on September 28, they've already found homes for six cats.
"That's just been our whole goal this whole time is to find homes for rescue cats. So to finally be open and having the adoptions happening right away is really, really exciting," said Maccombs.
The cats are kept in a separate room from where the food is prepared.
Plans to open a cat cafe in Lansing called The Trendy Tabby have not gone so smoothly.
Justine Bell formed a team in January and started a crowdfunding campaign in February that raised just over $3,000.
"When you start something and you get excited about it and everyone says it's a really good idea, it's something that becomes a part of your heart and you get really excited about," said Bell, executive director of The Trendy Tabby.
The team was planning to apply for a grant through the Michigan Economic Development Corporation on October 1, but because of budget concerns, the application was taken down from the website.
They're not giving up yet.
In the meantime, Bell is encouraging people to go to Constellation.
"We are all on the same team. Every time one gets adopted, every time somebody finds a kitten on a corner and keeps it and spays and neuters it, we win every time," said Bell.
Constellation is looking for volunteers.
