ELKHART, Ind. (AP) -- Shelters are open to assist people who've been evacuated from their homes because of flooding across the Midwest.
Flood warnings are in effect across a large swatch of the central U.S., from Wisconsin, Illinois and Ohio to Texas and Louisiana.
The American Red Cross has opened several shelters in northern Indiana, while Michigan officials are recommending the evacuations of some neighborhoods.
The flooding began this week, after heavy rain and melting snow combined to swell local rivers.
