Tornado, severe weather tears through Mid-Michigan

Parts of mid-Michigan are cleaning up after strong storms, including at least one confirmed tornado, tore through the region Thursday evening.

At least one tornado touched down in Shiawassee County at 7:03 p.m. near Vernon.

Officials say the same tornado touched down in nearby Durand at about 7:05 p.m.

The Shiawassee County Sheriff's Office said at least 50 homes were damaged from the large storm that also caused multiple power outages because of fierce winds.

Weather service officials say an unconfirmed tornado in Flushing, near Flint in Genesee County, reportedly touched down at 7:12 p.m.

As of Friday morning, no injuries or deaths were reported with the storms, sister station

The National Weather Service is planning to send a crew to the area Friday to assess the damage and determine the strength of the tornado.

In Lansing, rain drenched the area causing many roads to flood quickly. That caused officials to shut down many city streets and emergency crews responded to a large number of calls for stuck cars.

In East Lansing, Michigan State University had to block traffic on Shaw Lane after cars broke down on Campus Road from floodwaters.

The day also included severe thunderstorm warnings, watches, flooding, high winds and hail throughout other areas of lower Michigan.
