Ionia County Sheriff's deputies have concluded the investigation into what caused a truck to catch on fire on eastbound I-96.

It happened on September 10, at 7:30 p.m. near mile marker 71.

The investigation has concluded that a semi-truck that was traveling east had an unknown mechanical failure that caused the truck to catch fire.

The truck was a complete loss but the driver was able to pull it off the road and get out of the vehicle safely, deputies said.

I-96 was closed for about an hour and a half during the investigation.

The Ionia County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Berlin Orange Fire Department, Ionia County Central

Dispatch, and Reed and Hoppes Towing.
