Opioid crisis creates more organ donors in Michigan

LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - People who died from opioid overdoses last year helped fuel an increase in organ donations in Michigan.

"Gift of Life Michigan," says the state had 320 donors last year and more than 50 of them had died from a drug overdose.

That number of donations is a 26% increase from 2014.

Gift of Life is the state's federally designated organ and tissue recovery program.

It says overdose victims can have healthy organs to donate despite their addictions.
