BATH TOWNSHIP, MI. (WILX) -- Bath Township’s Police Department will be down two officers indefinitely, including its only detective, because they were arrested early Wednesday morning at a Grand Rapids bar.
Detective Bryan Miller, 34, and Officer Payton Warner, 24, were arrested around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday for taking part in a fight at The Web Bar while off duty.
That leaves the police department with nine officers while it conducts an internal investigation into the arrested officers’ conduct, Bath Township Police Lt. Gary Smith said.
“We’ll shuttle people around,” said Smith of the department’s staffing challenges. “Everybody picks it up a little bit more.”
Smith was a detective for 18 years before he became a lieutenant and said he could serve dual roles while Miller is on paid administrative leave.
Warner is also on paid leave.
Miller and Warner were arrested Wednesday in Grand Rapids on assault charges and have been released from the Kent County Jail. Smith said he assumes both have returned to the Lansing area.
Smith said it’s unclear how long his police department’s internal investigation will take. As of late Thursday afternoon, Smith had not received surveillance camera footage of the alleged altercation from the bar’s owners.
“Literally we have no footage other than what’s on the Internet,” Smith said. “I want to see the whole story from beginning to end.”
An employee who answered the phone at the bar Thursday afternoon said the owners have been in contact with Smith and are willing to cooperate in the investigation.
