Non-traditional Relevant Academy offers options for high school students
In this edition of Schools Rule, WILX News 10 is highlighting a school that is giving students flexible options.
Relevant Academy in Grand Ledge is designed so students get the virtual component of learning in the classroom.
The Academy is for students in grades nine, 10, 11 and 12. Right now, they have 55 students in total and they are all working on earning their high school diplomas.
"They feel welcomed, they feel like they can be successful, they feel like there's hope," said Jennifer Varney.
Varney is the Executive Director at Relevant Academy. The non-traditional school is attendance based and has an online curriculum.
"I think a lot of kids in education these days have such varied styles that it's very difficult to try to hit all of those in a large classroom setting," said Varney.
It's a year-round program and each student has his or her own individualized schooling plan.
"I think by personalizing things the way we do here at Relevant Academy, it really helps set that student up for success and helps them believe in themselves that they can accomplish whatever they want to do. They can be successful," continued Varney.
That includes Career and College Readiness programs. The online curriculum means students have access to their lessons whenever it is most convenient for them.
"We do have a very small class size, we have a lot of one on one support for our students," said Varney. "The students have access to their curriculum 24/7, and as most of us know nowadays, teenagers have a little different sleep patterns."
Relevant Academy is non competitive, so they are not competing with other schools for students.
Varney says they are more of a support system for students in Eaton Count and surrounding areas.
"I think sending that message to our communities, sending those messages to our families and our students that there are options and that again, not every mold fits every student so it's important that students, we want all students to feel successful," Varney explained.
When they graduate, students will have a High School Diploma that is in compliance with Michigan standards.
"It makes them feel like they are are very supported, the relationship building here is phenomenal," said Varney.
Relevant Academy started its pilot program in 2011. For more information on Relevant Academy and their open enrollment options, "a href="https://www.relevantacademy.org/" target="_blank">click here.
