LANSING, MI (WILX) -- News 10's Elissa Kedziorek spoke with Shari Steinback, a registered dietitian for the Michigan Apple Committee.
She shares some health benefits to eating apples along with a few tasty treats.

One of the treats she featured was the Apple Orchard Salad with Apple Cider Vinaigrette Dressing.
Here is the recipe to that dish:
Makes 6-8 servings
4 cups shredded chicken breast
8 cups spring greens
4 fresh Michigan Gala apples, thinly sliced
1 cup shredded Swiss cheese
1 cup glazed walnuts (recipe below)
1 cup apple cider vinaigrette dressing (recipe below)
1. Toss salad greens and apple cider vinaigrette together in bowl.
2. Arrange diced chicken on top of greens. Sprinkle cheese to cover. Arrange apple slices in circular rows to cover (hint: apple will oxidize, these should be placed just before serving. You may want to drop in lemon juice and water to prevent browning.)
3. Sprinkle glazed walnuts to finish and drizzle with Apple Cider Vinaigrette.
Apple Cider Vinaigrette Dressing:
2 cups fresh Michigan apple cider
½ teaspoons cracked black pepper
¼ cup apple cider vinegar
¼ teaspoon salt
Sprinkle of ground clove to taste
¼ teaspoon cinnamon
¼ cup sugar
1 and ¼ cup vegetable oil
Mix together all ingredients (except oil) until sugar is dissolved. Add oil and mix before serving.
Note: Will refrigerate up to one week.
1 cup walnut halves
1 tablespoon butter
2 tablespoons sugar
Melt butter in a sauté pan over medium heat. Sauté walnuts until slightly toasted. Sprinkle with sugar and toss over heat one minute.
Another treat she featured was the Apple Walnut Snack Cake.

Makes 16 servings
Tart Michigan Apples and crunchy walnuts make these moist, whole grain snack cake a perfect for a fall party or school treat.
2 cups whole wheat flour
1/4 cup wheat germ
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon salt
4 cups peeled, diced tart Michigan Apples*(4 medium)
3/4 cup granulated sugar
3/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1/2 cup canola oil
1 cup chopped walnuts
2 eggs, beaten
1 teaspoon vanilla
1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Coat a 13x9-inch baking pan with cooking spray.
2. In a medium bowl stir together flour, wheat germ, soda, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt; set aside.
3. In a large bowl combine apples, sugars, oil, walnuts, eggs and vanilla. Add flour mixture and stir gently to blend all ingredients well.
4. Spread mixture into baking pan and bake for 35-45 minutes or until cake is slightly browned and the center springs back when lightly touched.
5. Cool bars in pan then cut into 16 bars.
