New insight into why people gain weight as they get older
New research reveals why people tend to gain weight as they get older.
Scientists in Sweden studied fat cells in 54 men and women over 13 years.
During this time all of them had decreases in "lipid turnover" which is how quickly fat in the cells is removed and stored.
People who did not compensate by eating fewer calories gained weight by an average of 20%.
Prior studies have shown that one way to speed up lipid turnover is to exercise more.
