National Anthem back on the airwaves

LANSING, MI (WILX) - "Oh say can you see..." - the opening words of the National Anthem, and a song that many people will recall used to grace their television sets when TV stations signed off the air.

WILX News 10 and 93 other Gray Television stations are bringing back that tradition.

You will see and hear the National Anthem on WILX between 3 and 3:30 a.m. every day on channel 10 starting on June 26.

The anthem will be heard against a montage of landscapes, skylines, national landmarks, or American folks waving flags.

Up until television stations went to 24-hour operations in the 1980s and 90s, playing the anthem was traditionally how American television stations went off the air and returned back to the airwaves the following morning.

But this time, you won't hear a long beep after or the sound of static because WILX will continue to be on the air with programming for you night owls.

The initiative was recently announced at a Gray Television News Directors meeting.

WILX Vice President and General Manager, Debbie Petersmark, said the station is looking forward to airing the anthem. "We’re proud to work with our sister stations across the United States to bring this tradition back to the local airwaves.”

A little girl from Florida can be seen and heard singing the National Anthem in the video.

Reina Özbay, 9, was born on July 3 with fireworks going on outside the hospital. Her mother says she loves to perform and is classically trained in Opera.
