Mystery on I-96

LANSING, MI (WILX) -- Drivers are reacting to what they're calling a strange sight on a mid Michigan interstate.

"We were going eastbound, westbound was closed but we were driving eastbound and saw just a strange happening," Jane Snider, a driver, said. "There was a white box in the middle of the road similar to a white square Styrofoam cooler. One side was covered with foil and it appeared to have some kind of antenna on it."

The "mystery" on I-96 is actually no mystery at all. MDOT officials told News 10 that Ford Motor Company is testing self-driving vehicles on the road between MLK and Creyts.

"And right at the box there was a white sedan like almost on top of it," Snider said.

The autonomous cars are undergoing real-life scenarios on the road and MDOT's road closure is being used as a test ground.

"And then down the road a little bit we saw three like goldish colored sedans and it looked like maybe an MDOT crew," Snider said.

According to the automakers website, similar demonstrations are happening in Detroit and now the testing footprint is traveling beyond the Motor City.

"I was thinking that it could be some type of drill or test or something like that. It just seemed really unusual for it to be there during the rush hour period," Snider said.

Ford is also testing self-driving vehicles in cities like Pittsburg and Miami.
