Music may work as well as drugs before surgery

A new study suggests music may work just as well as drugs to calm the nerves of patients before surgery.
Researchers assigned over 150 adults to receive a sedative. or listen to a relaxing piece of music right before undergoing a nerve block.
They found changes in patients' anxiety levels were similar in both groups.
However, the music did make it more difficult for doctors and patients to communicate.
People in the music group were also less satisfied possibly because they were not allowed to choose their own tunes.
The study was led by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania and published in 'Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine'.
