Missing Mason High School ring finds its way back to owner 43 years later

MASON, MI (AP) -- It was over 40 years ago Shawn McNamara, a 1978 graduate of Mason High School, lost one of his most prized possessions, his class ring.

"This ring really represents the Mason Bulldogs and actually represents the bicentennial year 1976,” said McNamara.

While vacationing in Nashville with friends, Shawn took his ring off before shooting some hoops.

It wasn't until he got back to Michigan, that he realized it was gone.

“I frantically looked in my luggage, I called the family I was staying with and they looked viciously through the camper,” said McNamara.

It was around the same time Wisconsin native Keith Carter, 10-years-old at the time, was at the exact same park in Nashville as Shawn when he stumbled upon the missing ring.

"He picked it up and put it in his pocket. He got home and his mother was like where did you get that?” said Keith’s wife Lori Carter.

It was eventually given to Lori 20 years later to hold onto, which she did for 23 years.

After some spring cleaning, Lori came across the ring in her jewelry box, knowing now was the time to get it back to its rightful owner.

That's where the power of social media played a key role, in getting the ring back to Shawn.

Lori’s work buddy Lynn helped track down the Mason High School Alumni Facebook page.

From there, Lynn posted pictures and a description of the ring, a very specific description; Shawn's initials SCM.

It didn’t take long for Shawn to learn about the post.

“My younger brother sent me a message on messenger saying you might be interested in seeing what's going on in the mason bulldog alumni page,” said McNamara.

He checked out the page and saw it, his 43-year-old missing ring.

Shawn claimed the ring and it was sent back to him the next day looking better than new.

“I scrubbed it up and everything for him,” said Carter. “It was a little tarnished! So I got it nice for him."

A homeless veteran, Shawn has very few possessions.

He says the ring coming back into his life now is nothing short of a miracle.

“For something like to come back into my life after 43 years shows me that there's truly hope."
