LANSING, MI (WILX) -- A statewide effort aimed at curbing Michigan's opioid epidemic is happening this weekend and more than 1,000 pharmacies will be making it easier for people to get their hands on potentially life saving medicine.
Those pharmacies including dozens of them in mid-Michigan will be giving away free Naloxone nasal spray kits Saturday.
Naloxone is commonly sold under the brand name Narcan.
It's a fast acting medication that is used to reverse an opioid overdose.
It can also restore someones breathing and bring them back to consciousness.
Experts believe easier access to Narcan is responsible for a drop in overdose deaths in Michigan and across the country last year.
Over 50 thousand kits of Narcan nasal spray will be available Saturday at over 1,000 pharmacies across the state.
The State Health Department used a federal grant to pay for them.
Michigan doesn't require a prescription for Narcan which means they can be picked up anonymously.
Here is a complete list of the participating pharmacy locations.
