EAST LANSING, MI (WILX) -- Michigan State University had a little something to celebrate Thursday.

The university and the city of East Lansing officials celebrated the opening of a new, two-way protected bicycle path on Bogue Street.

The pilot project is designed to study if pedestrian bicyclist safety is improved in the high-traffic area.

“Our community is constantly seeking safe, sustainable transportation options and new area housing developments will increase that demand,” said East Lansing Mayor Mark Meadows. “This is the perfect time to try something brand new and it’s a first for mid Michigan.”

The official opening began at 1:30 p.m. with a ribbon cutting following immediately after.

The path will be open until October, according to a press release.
