MSU coach takes summer job to coach in Peru

EAST LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - A local coach has been chosen to serve as a United States head coach.

MSU's Suzy Merchant will be coaching the 2019 U.S. Pan American Games Women's Basketball Team.

According to USA Basketball, Merchant previously served as an assistant coach for the 2009 USA World University Games Team.

The team is not yet selected.

Trials will be held May 16-20 at the USO Training Center in Colorado Springs.

The games will take place July 31 - Aug. 4 in Lima, Peru.

To play on the U.S. team, athletes must be U.S. citizens and be currently enrolled as a full-time college student. They also need to have remaining eligibility for the 2019-2020 school year.

Merchant has experience with USA Basketball and is in her 12th season coaching MSU Woman's Basketball.

According to the USAB website, Merchant’s last stint with USA Basketball as an assistant coach in 2009, the USA went undefeated with a 7-0 record and took home the World University Games gold medal, topping Russia 83-64 in the championship game.

“First off I would say it’s extremely humbling,” Merchant said on the USAB site. “I don’t think there’s a prouder moment in your profession than to be able to represent your country and have the opportunity to win a gold medal. I feel very blessed and honored to have this opportunity.”
