Local students prepare for insurance careers

EATON COUNTY, Mich. (WILX)-- The insurance industry is all around us, from cars and houses, to caring for loved ones in an emergency. It is a booming field.

Thanks to some local high schools, Eaton RESA and a group of local businesses, certain students from Mid-Michigan are preparing now for bright futures by touring local agencies.

Greg Brown, an adjunct professor at Olivet College and insurance instructor, said, "Right now the opportunities are endless. With 50% of the industry retiring in the next five years. These home offices are looking to fill spots with the home talent as fast as they can. Getting in now will get ahead of the big group that gets hired within the next few years."

Dozens of juniors from Grand Ledge, Maple Valley, Potterville and Eaton Rapids learned from the professionals what it takes to cut it in risk management, finance and accounting careers. The field trip is through Eaton RESA's insurance program which targets high school juniors who can enroll their senior year at the center's insurance and risk management program at Farm Bureau through Olivet College; building their adult careers now while students in high school.
