Local mom says United Way Diaper Drive helps her family immensely

LANSING, MI (WILX) - Parents know, paying for diapers is a major family expense. For families on a tight budget, hundreds of dollars spent each month can really make it tough to make ends meet. That's why NEWS 10 has teamed up with the Capital Area United Way for a Diaper Drive benefiting local parents in need.

Last year the United Way collected over 12,000 diapers, and one local mother says being able to pick up free diapers helps her family spend money on other necessities. She said that without the Diaper Drive, she doesn't even know if her family would be able to afford their car.

As someone on an F2 Visa that can't work, Julia Ferreira goes out of her way to save her family money. She dresses her child in hand-me-down clothing, doesn't buy junk food, and stays home with her son to avoid paying for pricey child care. But her biggest expense, is something she can't re-use and she can't go without: diapers.

"Clothes you wash, and it's okay. But diapers, you just throw in the trash," said Ferreira. "Every week you need more diapers, so it's the biggest expense we have."

The Cristo Rey Community Center is one of many places that receives diaper donations from the United Way's drive. Ferreira says being able to pick up free diapers, changes her life for the better. Especially because she's expecting a second baby at the end of the summer.

"We're okay right now, because they're helping us," said Ferreira. "But without their help, we would be struggling a lot, to be honest."

Ferreira also knows that this drive helps families far beyond her own, and says receiving these donations inspire her to pay it forward in the future when her family is in a better place financially.

"It's not just me, it's a lot of people that are in need," said Ferreira. "Even people with just one kid, they need diapers, they need other things. So, open your heart to donation. Because when you help other people, they are really grateful for that. I'm really grateful for that. And one day, I expect to return this."

You can drop off donations of baby diapers, adult diapers, and baby wipes at any tri-county LAFCU branch, the Capital Area United Way, or any Lansing Ignite home soccer game until June 21, 2019.

If you'd like to make a monetary donation instead, you can text UWdiaper to 41444.
