Local Teachers on a Mission to Boost Girls' Self-Confidence
News 10's morning anchor Lora Painter talks with local teachers about their mission to boost girls' self-esteem.
Experts said girls starting puberty are at high-risk for low self-esteem and poor body image. Local teachers, like Becky Hager, a 4th grade teacher at Winans Elementary, brought a nationwide program to their schools to help girl learn how to succeed. "Girls on the Run" is a program that gets girls moving and building team spirit.
The full tuition costs $150 dollars for the 10 weeks. But every year, nearly half of the girls participating get some form of scholarship. Last spring, the Mid-Michigan chapter alone raised $42,000 to help girls participate at a lower cost.
