Wednesday marks the first day of Lent on the Christian calendar -- also known Ash Wednesday.

Some parishioners in the area, like the ones at Saint Mary Cathedral in Lansing, will receive the sign of the cross in ashes on their foreheads.

Mass at Saint Mary's is set for 8 a.m. and 12:05 p.m.

There's also one later in the day at 5:15 p.m.

People often use the 40 days of lent to pray, fast, or give up something ahead of Easter.
