The left lane of southbound I-69 near mile marker 66 is closed due to issues with the road surface, according to Eaton County road authorities.

This stretch of road regularly sees surfacing issues as temperatures begin to warm up.

Last year, the interstate buckled near southbound mile marker 48.

Road buckling happens when heat causes the pavement to weaken and crack or warp.

At this time, it is unknown how long the lane will be closed.

One woman told News 10 she was heading onto exit 60 over the weekend and this stretch of road destroyed her tire.

"Saturday night it was probably between 2:30 and 3 I was driving to my boyfriends house and I was getting off the exit and I hit what I thought was a bunch a rocks in the road and it blew my tire out," said Tasia Nainan.

MDOT said beginning in August, reconstruction will take place on I-69 from 5,000 feet north of I-94 in Calhoun County to Island Highway in Eaton County. MDOT said the reconstruction project will include ramps and collector distributors of the I-94/I-69 interchange.

MDOT said all ramps within the project limits will be reconstructed and bridgework will be done on most bridges within the project limits.

The project is expected to last until November of 2022, MDOT said.
