Not only should parents keep a close eye on their kids, but they also should pay attention to their pets on Halloween.

The ASPCA recommends pets stay in a separate, closed off room to keep them from bolting out the door when trick-or-treaters show up.

Experts say when the kids get home and you're checking -- or sampling -- their candy, make sure the family dog doesn't get into it.

Chocolate can be toxic to dogs.

Another danger is the artificial sweetener xylitol. It's found in a lot of mints and gum and can cause a deadly drop in a dog's blood sugar.
