Jackson residents react to new venue project

JACKSON COUNTY, MI (WILX) - $400,000 is what it's going to take to get the American 1 Credit Union Event Center back on track.

Keely Park in Downtown Jackson is home to the Jackson County Fair, but a new event center will be the latest main attraction.

"We don't have a spot in the community where, you know, a good meeting spot that I know of. So I just think it would be good for everything, everybody involved," said Kellie Mulnix, Jackson resident.

The American 1 Event Center initially came with a $6 million price tag, but based on current market conditions, that price has gone up by $422,000.

"I kind of wish they would have left things like they were. I'm 76 years old so I don't like spending a lot of money," said Reynolds Grant, Jackson resident.

Rockford Construction and Jackson County have been working on the venue's design for 15 months, but their latest budget presentation shows construction jobs are getting more expensive in Michigan due to an overflow of projects with minimal materials to get the job done.

"We need it and I hope that they can figure out the budget," said Melissa Patrick, Jackson resident.

The Jackson County Board of Commissioners passed the new $6.4 million budget.

American 1 Credit Union is investing $4 million towards the project.

The remaining balance will be absorbed by the county.

"Maybe in their way of thinking, because they spent so many millions of dollars already, that it may not be a lot of money," said Reynolds.

News 10 reached out to the board's chairman for comment but has not yet received a response.

Construction on the project is expected to be complete next spring.
