Ingham County will soon have a brand new animal shelter.
Monday a ceremonial groundbreaking ceremony was held at the site in Mason.
The new facility will be built next to the old, outdated shelter.
It's being paid for with money from the animal control millage and private donations.
The new building will have indoor and outdoor kennels -- with an outdoor "cat-io" for adoptable cats.
Former shelter dog Rio wore a hard hat-- to help dig the first hole.
Construction is expected to take about a year.
