How to properly stay hydrated during high temps

LANSING, MI (WILX) -- Besides the Jackson Jubilee this weekend--- the Faster Horses Country Music Festival begins Friday, attracting thousands to join in the concerts and parties.

And with dangerous heat in the forecast, drinking alcohol can multiply that danger.

Alcohol dehydrates and interferes with your body's ability to regulate its own temperature.

And when the sun is beating on your during Faster Horses or other outdoor activities, the feeling will be amplified.

Medical officials at Sparrow suggests those drinking to pace themselves with their drinks.

They say to drink slowly and to take breaks.

They also say to stay hydrated.

Drink a bottle of water in between your alcoholic beverages.

"Well alcohol does increase the risk of dehydration. Even though you're drinking it's a dietetic. And so its really important to drink water in addition to alcohol if you are drinking alcohol not to drink too excess," said Miranda Cristales, a physician assistant at Sparrow Urgent Care.

But if you are overheating, medical experts are advising you not to grab a glass of ice cold water, as super cold water is actually hard for the digestive system to handle

If you're overheated and drink ice-cold water, the mismatch of temperatures can shock your body and cause stomach pain and nausea.

Health officials at Sparrow have suggestions on other ways to cool off quickly.

"Consider cool washcloths all over the body maybe with a low grade fan and also maybe a cool bath," said Cristales. "I would avoid an ice bath but just cool water can really help lower the body quickly."

Health officials say you should drink water in moderate temperatures before grabbing your ice cold drink.
