On day 28 of the partial government shutdown, some area businesses are looking to do their part to help federal workers affected.
Great Harvest Bread Company in Okemos is welcoming them to check out their "Shut Down Shelf." Any federal worker not receiving a paycheck can pick up a free loaf of bread.
Sue Ulrich, Owner, said, "We've been talking about a way to do this for a couple weeks. A lot of other Great Harvests in the country are doing this and we thought we'd pick up on it and give it a try and see how the community reacted and see if we can get the bread into the right hands to the people who really need it right now."
The store started giving out the free loaves Thursday and people are taking advantage.
