The 58-year-old man who died at the scene was Brian Eugene Hunter from Charlotte, a retired Lansing police officer.

The other driver from the eastbound vehicle is Alecia Lawson, age 33, of Eaton Rapids.

Hunter tried to make a pass in the left-hand turn lane when he hit the eastbound car driven by Lawson, who was trying to make a left turn.

Hunter was pronounced dead at the scene.

News 10's Kellan Buddy talked to a few people who worked around the area of the crash. They did not want to speak on camera but said the crash closed off the intersection for a couple of hours.

Workers at the capitol barricading said that once they saw what had happened, they rushed to block off the road right away.

Lieutenant Jeff Clarke from the Clinton County Sheriffs Office said it is legal to pass in a turn lane only under certain circumstances. Those circumstances did not apply in Tuesday morning's crash.

Deputies were dispatched to the crash around 6:36 a.m. on Grand River near Felton Road in Watertown Township.

Police said it was a head-on collision and that the woman was traveling east on Grand River and was hit by the male driver who police say was passing a car and in the opposite lane when he hit the oncoming vehicle.

The man was driving a 1999 Oldsmobile and was from Charlotte.

The Michigan Department of Transportation had sent out an alert around 7 a.m. that Eastbound Business Loop I-96 (Grand River Avenue) at Felton Rd in Watertown Township was closed due to a crash.

The crash remains under investigation by the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office.

Clinton County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Dewitt Township Police, Delta Township Fire and Rescue and Clinton County Central Dispatch.
