GRAND LEGDE, Mich. (WILX) -- Elementary and middle schoolers spent their weekend away from the couch and in some heated competition.

The Grand Ledge Robotics Club, a member of VEX Robotics, hosted a regional competition Saturday.

The VEX robotics program gives kids a chance to work with others, and succeed in extracurricular activities other than sports.

"The focus of this program is to the kids, to give kids an opportunity to excel, and find their peers on Monday and say, 'hey, I rocked it at a robotics competition.' it's something unique and different, and it's very very rewarding," said Grand Ledge Robotics Club President Casey Ries.

27 teams from across central and southwestern Michigan competed to advance to the state competition in Charlotte.
