Gov. Gretchen Whitmer made an emergency announcement Wednesday night, appealing to all Michigan residents to cut back on energy usage.

She made the announcement from the State Police Emergency Operations Center in a surprise press conference.

Whitmer called on everyone to limit their use of natural gas in order to help everyone get through the dangerously cold weather.

"Due to the extremely high demand for natural gas and a facility incident, Consumers Energy has asked everyone in the Lower Peninsula to turn our thermostats down to 65 degrees or less from now until Friday at noon," Whitmer said.
