LANSING, MI (WILX) - Governor Gretchen Whitmer is calling for more affordable access to higher education in Michigan.
The governor announcing on Thursday the MI Opportunity Initiative at Lansing Community College.
It's a plan to give high school students a chance to further their education, without sending them into massive debt.
In her pitch, Governor Whitmer also encouraged lawmakers to include trade schools in this program.
"It's time for us to change direction...to ensure that we create opportunities for people in our state, so businesses can stay and thrive, and others can some to our state and make an investment here."
The MI Opportunity Initiative would provide tuition assistance to eligible students for up to three years of community college, or until the student earns 60-semester credits, and/or an associate's degree.
The bill has been moved to the House Appropriations Committee for consideration.
