LANSING, MI (WILX) -- Governor Gretchen Whitmer is scheduled to speak at the 2019 Midwestern Infrastructure Week Summit at the Lansing Brewing Company at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday in Lansing.
Governor Whitmer's appearance comes as an impasse between her and Republican leaders could see some progress.
The Detroit News reports Whitmer will meet with House Speaker Lee Chattfield on Tuesday after meeting with Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey on Tuesday.
The meetings come as Gov. Whitmer has threatened to veto GOP-approved plans in the House and Senate aimed at cutting Michigan's auto insurance rates.
Chattfield touted the House's plan that was passed last week as, "A good reform that delivers rate relief to all people in our state and gives them the hallmark plans that they've been asking for."
That House bill eliminates the requirement for all drivers to buy lifetime coverage for catastrophic injuries.
The bill now awaiting action in the Senate also includes a mandatory five-year rate reduction.
The Senate approved its own auto insurance plan earlier this month.
If Whitmer and GOP leaders are not able to agree on how to move forward on tackling auto insurance rates, the Detroit News reports the GOP-led legislature could force the issue by finalizing a plan on its own and sending it to Whitmer's desk this week.
