Gov. Whitmer addresses gun control debate in Reo Town

LANSING, MI (WILX) -- Governor Gretchen Whitmer addressed the ongoing topic of gun control while out in Lansing's Reo Town Monday.

She's calling for a "Red Flag" law in Michigan to help stop violence.

Whitmer spoke on the topic last week and said the gun lobby has sold Americans a false narrative of having to pick one of two sides in the gun debate.

She repeated that message Monday.

"I think Michigan has an opportunity to lead. I don't wanna be reactive I wanna be proactive," Whitmer said. "We have to be mindful of the fact that there's improvements that I think we can make with regard to gun safety and policy here in Michigan and I want to see if we can find some common ground."

Whitmer also mentioned proposed legislation in Michigan that would allow a judge to take away a person's guns if they are deemed suicidal or a threat to others.

Fifteen other states have passed similar laws.
